Cerebral Palsy Boy Enjoys Summer Games
Kenny Bedtka has cerebral palsy and needs to get around in an electric wheelchair. But that doesn't stop him from playing baseball.
Kenny is one of over 150 participants in the Southeastern Minnesota Miracle League's summer season. The league has a six-week spring and summer season. The organization began 10 years ago in Georgia and has spread across the U.S., with over 100 fields built and 100 more being planned.
The Miracle League field has a solid rubber surfaced field, which allows barrier-free accessibility and the bases are painted so kids with cerebral palsy, like Kenny, can use wheelchairs, crutches and walkers.
The Miracle League features three different levels of competition. There are non-competitive divisions for adults and children where outs aren't recorded, no score is kept and everyone bats.
Bedtka, who graduated in 2002 from Century High School and played adaptive floor hockey, the league has become an important summer event. His transition to the game was smooth and he learned to encourage his fellow teammates.
What a great past-time for CP kids!
