Challenges for Adults With Cerebral Palsy

The Surmountable Challenges of Adults with CP

Adults with cerebral palsy will encounter varying challenges depending on the type and severity of the condition, as well as how the disorder is being managed. Some of the most common problems they face are muscle spasms and tightness, which are susceptible to worsening or not progressing at all. Many adults with cerebral palsy will experience difficulty walking at some point in their lives. Because of the strain this condition inflicts on the body, arthritis can develop within some individuals at a considerably earlier age.

They are also more prone to dental problems than people without CP. This is not attributed as much to the underlying condition as it is the inability to control their movement during dental procedures. While more severe forms of CP can drastically shorten life expectancy, some patients can live as long as average adults and only suffer from mild disability. Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to determine how an adult will be affected or how their condition will progress.

Adults with cerebral palsy often require extra help to perform daily activities. This usually includes eating, bathing, dressing and finding suitable employment. Depending on the condition, they may require a personal in-house assistant. They may also need special types of adaptive equipment and technologies to help them accomplish routine tasks. With the proper management of the condition and dedicated support, adults with cerebral palsy can live on their own, raise families, work full-time jobs and participate in various leisure activities. The key to maintaining their health and flexibility is exercise and regular activity.
