3 Difficulties Cerebral Palsy Causes
Cerebral palsy causes many different challenges for those who suffer from it. Because it has such devastating effects on control of the muscles, many of these challenges are related to mobility and to taking care of the kind of everyday tasks that most of us take for granted.
Getting Around
Getting around is hard when you have cerebral palsy. In the best cases, individuals who suffer it tend to have a shaky walk and problems keeping their balance. Crutches are usually a given for sufferers of this condition. Many of the people who suffer from it have to use wheelchairs for their entire lives. This, of course, means dealing with all of the problems that people with mobility impairments deal with every day.
Movement Control
Dyskinetic cerebral palsy and many other forms of the disorder cause trouble when people try to do find work. In many cases, the harder they concentrate when trying to do such work the more they'll tremble and the more difficult the task will become. This can include just about any kind of task. Some individuals will have trouble with opening doors and others will only have trouble when they try something very complex, such as tying their shoes or picking something small up off of a table.
Intellectual Impairments
Some individuals with CP have varying degrees of intellectual impairment. In severe cases, they may not be able to speak or go to school at all. In other cases, they may just need a bit of extra attention to compensate for hearing or speech issues that make it hard for them to progress through school at the usual rate. Some people with CP have no intellectual impairments at all and will be able to work any job or undertake any activity where their physical impairments are not an issue.
Causes
Brain damage is always the cause of CP. The area that provides control over the muscles is specifically affected. The most common cause of this disorder is when an infant is deprived of oxygen during the birthing process. This may happen because they become pinned during delivery or because the umbilical cord becomes wrapped around them.
In some cases, there is a direct connection between the CP and medical negligence of one sort or another. When this is the case, it's important to talk to an attorney about whether or not you could file a legal action to seek compensation for the expenses and pain and suffering your child as endured.
