Activities For Your Cerebral Palsy Child

When a child has cerebral palsy, the brain is damaged and does not develop properly. This damage may be the result of injury, illness or trauma, which may occur prior, during or after birth. Cerebral palsy is not a hereditary disorder and it is not contagious. The damage to the brain does not deteriorate over time, however, the effects that this damage has on the body can worsen.

Treatments for cerebral palsy range in variety. Some of them include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. It is very important that your child receives regular physiotherapy and exercise. Participation in games and outdoor activities are also quite crucial to your child's physical development. You should try and make sure that you choose activities that your child will enjoy.

Some activities include:

Taking your child to parks, gardens, zoos, playgrounds, markets and so forth. This will help with sensory development.

Playing games that will stimulate crawling. This will aid in the development of muscle tone.

Placing toys at a distance that your child will need to reach out and pick them up.

Enrolling your child in gym classes.

Taking your child on bicycle rides.

Taking your child swimming. Swimming is very good for increasing muscle tone and strengthening the respiratory system.

Encouraging your child to become friends with other kids and ensuring that he is included in their play.

Drawing and painting.

Using picture boards and signs as communication devices.

These are only some of the activities that your child can participate in. Remember, you are only limited by your own creativity!
