Baby Injury | Signs of Cerebral Palsy

cerebral palsy in infants, birth injury, medical negligenceCerebral palsy in infants is sometimes difficult to detect. This birth injury affects the muscles, causing abnormal tone and myriad associated problems. In some cases, it’s difficult to detect this birth injury because the child simply hasn’t started moving around much. The first year of life is full of what are oftentimes called “milestones”. These include events such as turning over, babbling and other signs that the infant is developing a healthy body. When these milestones are delayed, it can sometimes indicate that there is a serious problem with the child.

Cerebral palsy is a type of baby injury that can occur naturally or due to medical malpractice. The infant’s oxygen supply is cut off and this results in a specific type of brain damage. It tends to manifest as problems with movement, sometimes with speech and, in some cases, there are associated learning difficulties. The symptoms of this disorder do not lessen with time, though cerebral palsy is not degenerative. It does, however, typically require a lifetime of treatment. Being alert for the early signs of this injury can make certain that the affected child gets the treatment they need. Some common signs include:

  • Delayed turning over, crawling and walking
  • Problems with speech or babbling
  • Abnormal stiffness or looseness of the body
  • Eyes that drift to the inside or outside

This birth injury almost always means that there will be a very long and involved treatment program called for. The expenses associated with these treatments can be very high, sometimes being far out of the realistic financial resources of the family affected. In cases where this injury occurs because of medical negligence, calling an attorney is an option. There is a chance that you could be compensated for your child’s injury.

Baby brain damage causes problems that persist through life. For the rest of your life, and your child’s life beyond that, your child will likely require medical treatment, and possibly assistance in pursuing an independent life. If a hospital, doctor or nurse was responsible for your child’s brain injury, you may be able to pursue a jury award or a settlement. The only way to find out is to talk to a competent attorney. Many good attorneys work on contingency, which means that you can consult with them about your case and even pursue it for no upfront costs, paying only if you win your case.
