Birth Injury Attorney | How to Assist a Child with Cerebral Palsy

A child with cerebral palsy will need some assistance, of course, and there are some very constructive ways that you can go about giving it to them. This starts with understanding the disorder. For example, there are different types of CP and they have different effects. A child with ataxic cerebral palsy will have somewhat different needs than a child with dyskinetic cerebral palsy. Your physician will help you with providing good care, but there are some things you may want to consider on your own.

Walking Devices

Most people with CP have some trouble walking. However, having a physical therapist help your child may allow them to use a less complex assistive device to get around. For example, learning to use crutches is a skill that some children with CP can take to very well. However, in order to learn how to use the crutches they may need a bit of help. Talk to your doctor about the options, and see if your child may be able to use something less involved for an assistive device. Moving from a wheelchair to crutches can often mean a lot more freedom for the child.

Speech Therapy

Because CP affects the muscles, including those found in the face, speech is oftentimes a challenge for people with CP. Speech therapists, however, can sometimes work wonders for children. Learning to speak can be much harder for people with CP, but that doesn't mean that they cannot do it. It might be a big challenge, but it's a huge self-esteem booster and it can make socialization a lot more fun.

Muscle Therapies

There are treatments that can help people with CP who suffer from spasms and other difficulties of the sort. As is the case with any type of treatment, it sometimes takes a while to find the right one for the patient. With the help of good healthcare professionals, you can investigate different treatments and see what works for your child. It may change over time, but you can always work with professionals to see what else is out there.

Cerebral Palsy can be a devastating condition, but there are many things you can do to help improve their quality of life. Remember that the options for all of these treatments always evolve, so keep up on the latest news and, if something seems like a good idea, talk to your doctor about it.
