Cerebral Palsy Birth Injury Case in St. Louis
A birth injury lawsuit has been filed against St. Louis University, Memorial Hospital and the doctor who delivered the baby. The complaint alleges that medical mistakes caused Haley Overmeyer to develop cerebral palsy, a disability that is caused by permanent brain damage. The lawsuit was filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court in Illinois last week, after a birth that occurred on January 9, 2005.
According to the St. Clair Record, the mother of the child with cerebral palsy failed to resuscitate the child, to ensure that she was properly intubated or to properly monitor her.
Cerebral palsy is a disorder of control and muscle coordination that is typically associated with seizures, sensory disruptions and cognitive impairment.
This is a condition that caused the brain damage that is suffered by a baby before, during or immediately after birth. Cerebral palsy can be the result of medical malpractice. Haley Overmeyer's lawsuit alleges that the doctor, who was an employee of the St. Louis University and Memorial Hosptital, did not follow the appropriate standard of medical care, which could have prevented the condition.
Cerebral palsy is incurable, however, there are several cerebral palsy treatments that are available, such as physical therapy, surgery, medication and assistive technology, which will be able to help individuals with CP live a better life. The medical expenses for this can be in the millions of dollars.
