Cerebral Palsy Information | Caring for Cerebral Palsy is Not Cheap

Caring for Cerebral Palsy is Not Cheap

When parents find out that their infant has suffered a birth injury, it's natural for them to instantly wonder what this means for the child's future. In cases where cerebral palsy is the result of the injury, the future can mean a lot of medical expenses, special assistance for the child and doctor's care to make sure that the child has as rich a life as possible. The problem is paying for all of this.

What are the Immediate Effects of Cerebral Palsy?

The effects of Cerebral Palsy depend greatly upon how much the child is actually affected by the brain injury. All CP is caused by a specific type of brain injury, but it may be more or less severe. The main effects of this injury are:

  • Difficulty controlling the muscles
  • Uneven muscle tone
  • Intellectual impairments

All of these effects are variable. Most of the children who have CP do need some assistance, however, and that can get very costly over time.

Paying the Costs

One of the options that parents who have a baby with CP have is contacting a birth injury attorney. There are some important facts about CP that you need to keep in mind:

  • It can happen due to natural causes
  • It can happen without negligence being an issue
  • It can happen outside of anyone's ability to stop it

There are cases, however, when a doctor, a healthcare facility or members of the delivery team are to blame for the injury occurring or for not preventing it from happening. Such cases may involve not moving the child out of an awkward position where their oxygen is cut off, failing to notice that the child was being strangled by the umbilical cord or for other reasons.

Contingency Agreements

Contingency agreements are an option for hiring a lawyer. Under this agreement, the lawyer doesn't actually charge you up front for pursuing your case. They won't assess legal fees until they've actually won your case and, if they fail to win your case, you don't pay any fees at all. There are several advantages to this agreement.

If the attorney doesn't win your case, they won't charge you anything at all. This means that they're not going to take your case unless they think it's going to win. This agreement makes it possible for anyone to pursue a case, whether or not they have cash on hand.
