Cerebral Palsy and Treatment Options
Cerebral palsy is a debilitating condition that results from a birth injury. The condition is caused by damage to the parts of the brain that control the muscles. It results in the muscles having uneven tone and diminishes fine motor skills. In some types of cerebral palsy, the characteristic tremors increase when the sufferer attempts to use their fine motor skills to do simple tasks.
Cerebral palsy in infants is sometimes not noticed immediately. When it is, it is often because the infant’s arms or legs seem very rigid or very floppy. The infant may also be delayed in milestones such as turning over on their own. When cerebral palsy is diagnosed, there is very little good news.
Cerebral palsy does not heal because it is a brain injury. It does not, however, worsen with time. The symptoms of the disorder may become more severe as the sufferer ages, in some cases. The symptoms vary by the type of cerebral palsy, as do the treatments.
In the case of ataxic cerebral palsy, the symptoms oftentimes include shaking when trying to perform precise tasks. Sometimes, sufferers are given medications to relax their muscles and to lessen these symptoms. In other cases, there are treatments that are given directly to the muscles that may improve these symptoms. Depending upon the severity of the CP, the sufferer may show improvement with treatment or they may never be able to perform tasks such as writing, opening and closing doors and so forth.
These treatments can be very expensive. In the most severe cases of CP, the sufferer may require a lifetime of them, making their costs of living exceptionally high. Some parents who believe that their baby’s injuries were caused by medical negligence seek out an attorney to help them sue for damages.
Not all cases of CP are caused by birth injuries. When medical negligence is to blame, however, the law provides ways for the family affected to seek compensation. This may occur due to a successful jury trial or, in some cases, the party being sued may simply want to settle the case out of court and may offer a suitable amount. Lawyers who work these cases sometimes do so on contingency, which minimizes your risk by ensuring that you only pay for their legal services if they manage to win compensation from a jury or a settlement.
