Cerebral Palsy Information | Chatting on Computers Gives Kids with CP a Voice

Chatting on Computers Gives Kids with CP a Voice

The Warwick Daily News, an Australian newspaper, reports that children are being given a chance to speak more comfortably because of technology. An article from October of 2011 details how children are being tutored in using a text-to-speech device that allows them to communicate with the assistance of a computer. Of course, this isn't the only instance where this technology is being used to help people with speech impediments.

Cerebral Palsy and Communication

One of the most difficult things that people with cerebral palsy deal with is the characteristic problems with speech those with the disorder suffer. The speech problems can make children feel isolated and, of course, make it hard for them to take care of everyday needs. Because of that, children with CP sometimes end up not participating in activities with other children. Being socially isolated is one of the most significant problems that come along with this disorder, in fact, and it can cause significant issues for the development of the people who suffer it.

The speech device profiled in the article allows the user to make icons out of common words and phrases. When they need to say them, they can select the icon on the screen. There are other devices that sufferers can use, as well. With an interface that helps with typing, someone with CP can use a regular text-to-speech interface to communicate, as well.

From the Other Side

Unfortunately, some people who hear someone with CP talk assume that the difficult time that they have speaking means that they cannot understand well, either. This isn't necessarily the case. People with CP sometimes have their full mental capacities, but have trouble walking and speaking, and that can make life very frustrating for them. Computerized devices that allow them to speak in a way that is easily understood can make life much less isolated and frustrating for sufferers of CP.

Technology and medical procedures come at high prices. In some cases, families will not be able to pay for the costs of the procedures and the devices that would help their children to live much more fulfilling lives. Finding a Texas cerebral palsy lawyer may help you to get compensated for your child's injuries, as well as their pain and suffering. Cerebral palsy in infants means a lifetime of medical expenses. A lawyer may be able to help your family find a way to pay for those expenses.
