Coping with the Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy comes with a host of symptoms that are sometimes debilitating. Cerebral palsy in infants can be hard to detect because the infants aren't doing the activities with their muscles that would tip doctors off to the fact that there is a problem. This used to be a more of a problem in the past than it is today, however. Modern scanning and diagnostic technologies make it much more likely that a case of CP will be detected much earlier than it was in the past.

Early Years

Children with CP will tend to lag behind their peers in reaching milestones of development. This will continue throughout childhood. Some children will never be able to walk on their own and others will; some children will have serious hearing impairments and others will hear normally. This disorder can be very different between one case and the next in terms of the severity of the symptoms, so there is usually a lot that the parents will have to find out about their child's particular needs that can only be learned from experience.

Some of the worst effects of cerebral palsy that will be experienced by older children are those that have to deal with social issues. While many children with cerebral palsy have the full intellectual capacity of their peers, they will still usually have mobility issues and coordination issues that will make it difficult for them to participate in many activities that their peers enjoy.

Where medical problems are concerned, the symptoms of cerebral palsy can worsen over time. The injury that causes the disorder does not get any worse, however. A child who manages to walk using braces in their earlier years may develop trouble walking without crutches as they get older. It depends upon the success of the treatments that they undergo and how their body develops.

Some of the issues that children with CP have to deal with are also educational. Even when children do have the full intellectual capacity that would be expected at their age, they will usually have some trouble with memory or other cognitive processes that their peers will not have to deal with. This means that parents have to make sure that the child is getting adequate access to educational resources that are tailored to their needs and that they are given every opportunity to learn to the best of their abilities.
