Recognizing Brain Injuries in Children
In some cases, a baby injury can result in trauma with lifetime implications. One of the most devastating manifestations of brain injuries is cerebral palsy, a condition where the affected individual’s ability to control their muscles is severely impacted. In some cases, this injury almost completely incapacitates the victim. In others, the individual affected is functional, but suffers severe motor impairment and, frequently, cognitive impairment.
Because this injury affects parts of the brain that control the muscles, cerebral palsy in infants is oftentimes not immediately detected. When the infant fails to gain strength and coordination as is to be expected, however, cerebral palsy may be one of the first things that doctor’s check for. In some cases, an infant will obviously have unusual muscle tone, being very rigid or having hardly any muscle tone or strength at all.
People who suffer from CP oftentimes have very difficult times trying to perform simple, everyday tasks if those tasks require precise movements. Attempting to perform tasks such as picking up small objects, steadying one’s self or even keeping the head still may be nearly impossible. This means, of course, that people who suffer from CP oftentimes need full-time caregivers, whether they are parents or professionals, and that means a lot of expenses.
Cerebral palsy is one of the brain injuries that can result from medical negligence. This condition is caused when the brain is starved of oxygen. This may be because the infant is choked by the umbilical cord during birth or because they end up in a position where their brain is being starved of oxygen. This injury cannot heal, as it involves direct damage to the brain. While it will not become worse over time, there are sometimes increases in the severity of symptoms that do present problems as the affected individual ages.
Recognizing the signs of CP is very important to making sure that children get the correct treatments. Though the injury cannot be healed, it is possible for people with CP to live fulfilling lives and to enjoy some improvements in their condition. These treatments, of course, are very expensive. If you believe that your family has been affected by CP that was caused by negligence on the part of a doctor or the facility where your child was born, consider contacting a lawyer. You may be able to get compensation for your difficulties.
