Cerebral Palsy Information | The Cost of CP Affects Families Worldwide
The Cost of CP Affects Families Worldwide
Most of the time, when you hear about families suffering because birth mistakes led to their child being afflicted with CP, it's a story that originates in the US. People around the world are affected by this injury, however, and the financial fallout can be devastating, no matter where you're located.
Far Away but Very Close
Zhang Shaopeng is a child from China whose parents managed to get him the surgery he needed to give him the ability to walk. Unlike most children in the US, Shaopeng was diagnosed late in life for a cerebral palsy sufferer: at the age of 2. Most of the time, cerebral palsy in infants is diagnosed much sooner in children in the US because of better technology being available.
Shaopeng is now 12 years old and has recently received a surgery that costs $7,760 US, according to an article in China Daily, which is an enormous amount of debt for the child's parents, who are farmers in a province nearby where the surgery was performed. Like many parents in the US, having their child's life improved by immeasurable degrees is sometimes made a less happy occasion because of the huge expenses that come along with it. Like children in the US, Shaopeng will face a lifetime of treatment for his condition and that will only mean more expenses.
Close to Home
Many US families face this same crisis. The treatment of cerebral palsy conditions oftentimes means very expensive surgeries, therapies and other medical procedures that families simply cannot afford to have done for their children. With health insurance being more and more expensive and fewer people actually even having it, the situation is made even worse.
In cases where the child's cerebral palsy was the result of some sort of medical negligence, parents can sometimes sue, providing their child with enough money to pay for their treatments and their care throughout their life. No lawsuit is a guaranteed win, however, and some parents end up having to face this alone or to take on huge amounts of debt to deal with the fallout of cerebral palsy.
In Texas, parents can speak with a lawyer to see if they have a claim that's worth filing. If a lawyer believes that they do, the lawyer may offer to take the case and go to court with the parents. Sometimes, this is the best option that parents have.
