Treating Severe Cerebral Palsy Symptoms
While some people with cerebral palsy manage to lead relatively normal lives, there are those who have very severe symptoms and who need an extensive amount of assistance just to get by on a day-to-day basis.
Cognitive Impairments
Some people with cerebral palsy suffer cognitive impairments that brink on vegetative states. In these cases, the brain damage is usually so severe that there is really no chance that they will ever be able to lead anything resembling a normal life. In the worst-case scenarios, these individuals will have to live out their lives in assisted care facilities where a professional nursing staff can attend to their everyday needs. In some cases, however, individuals who suffer cerebral palsy that is that severe may be able to live at home but will still need a lot of care from their parents and will need expensive equipment to provide for their needs.
Mobility
One of the most devastating consequences of cerebral palsy is the potential for a complete lack of mobility. Some people who have this disorder spend most of their lives in a wheelchair. Others may need walkers or be able to walk on crutches but will still have significant difficulties getting to places that aren't specifically set up to accommodate handicapped individuals. In some cases, the mobility equipment such individuals need is very expensive. For example, if your child needs to be in a wheelchair full-time, you may need to purchase a van with a wheelchair lift and other equipment just to get them back and forth to doctor's appointments. This type of equipment can cost literally tens of thousands of dollars.
There are cases where individuals who suffer from cerebral palsy also suffer from very serious symptoms such as seizures. In these cases, they will generally need specific types of medication to treat those problems. Seizures can usually be controlled with the right medication but, of course, that medication can sometimes be very expensive.
If the reason your child developed cerebral palsy was medical negligence, you may want to consider contacting a birth injury attorney. A good cerebral palsy lawyer may be able to help you put together a lawsuit that will be persuasive enough to a jury that they will award you compensation. If your lawsuit is particularly good, the party you are suing may well come forward and offer a settlement so that they can avoid the costs of going to court for a case that they are certain to lose.
