Treatment for Cerebral Palsy Doesn't Come Cheap

One of the most difficult cerebral palsy facts that parents have to face is that the condition is incurable. Cerebral palsy in infants is the result of a brain injury and, as most people are aware, the brain does not heal in the same way as the other organs of the body do. This injury will not worsen as time goes on, but the symptoms will last for the entire lifespan of the affected individual. There are treatments for this condition, however. They generally involve trying to make the symptoms less unpleasant and quality of life for the affected higher.

Most cerebral palsy patients will suffer damage that makes it difficult for them to learn and some of them will not be able to reach the full mental capacity of a healthy adult. This means that they’ll likely need extra help in school and may need to work with teachers who specialize in helping such children. Even with this extra help, they’ll likely lag behind their peers, but this is not always the case. People with CP can and do learn, however, and they can live a rich life in this regard with the right type of assistance.

People with cerebral palsy oftentimes suffer speech and hearing difficulties. These can be socially awkward and require medical equipment and expertise to treat. Hearing difficulties can be helped with hearing aids, of course, and these can assist the child in learning and in just enjoying their lives a bit more. Again, this does cost money and, if you want to get speech therapy for your child so that they can communicate a bit more easily, the expenses can be very high. These, and other, expenses are among the primary reasons that some parents sue for damages if medical negligence was the reason for their child’s injury.

Whether or not you’re realistically able to pay for it, you’ll be facing the expense of taking care of a child with special needs and your child, of course, will have to live with consequences far beyond financial ones. Some attorneys specialize in birth injury cases and they may be able to help you win a jury award or a settlement that could help offset these expenses. Check for an attorney that works on contingency. This allows you to meet with them for free and not to pay unless they win.
