Understanding Cerebral Palsy Causes
Cerebral palsy causes myriad difficulties for the people who suffer it. Some of the things people think about it are not true, however. For instance, not everyone with cerebral palsy suffers with severe intellectual challenges. In fact, people with CP sometimes have as much intellectual capacity as anyone else and suffer from the physical effects far more than the mental effects. Even those physical are felt to varying degrees. Understanding what causes this disorder can go a long way toward understanding the realities of living with it.
How it Happens
Cerebral palsy is the result of a brain injury. The injury affects that area of the brain that has to do with muscle control. There are different types of conditions that result from the disorder, but most of them are associated with difficulty moving more than anything effects. Sufferers frequently:
- Have difficulty walking or cannot walk at all
- Tremble when they’re reaching for small objects or performing delicate tasks
- Have trouble speaking and controlling facial muscles
- Have hearing impairments
- Need long term care
- Have learning disabilities
Brain Injuries
Brain injuries never heal. This means that anyone with cerebral palsy has a condition that will not get better over time. The condition doesn’t worsen over time, but the symptoms sometimes become more severe over time. In cases where this happens, the affected individual may need more care. Of course, this may mean more expenses for this care and, for some families, it may mean that those costs become too high for them to handle on their own.
Medical Negligence
Medical negligence is sometimes the cause of CP. This occurs when the baby’s brain is starved of oxygen for a reason that could have been prevented with the appropriate medical interventions. In cases where this occurs, it may be possible to undertake a legal action to seek compensation for the costs of the injury, the pain and suffering of your child and for the ongoing medical expenses that you and your family will face.
If you suspect negligence, speak to a qualified attorney. You’ll want an attorney who has dealt with such cases before and who can provide you with information that is accurate and that will help you to determine whether it’s worth it to press ahead with a lawsuit. If this proves to be the case, you may be eligible for a significant award from a jury or a settlement, but only a lawyer will know for sure if your case has a chance.
