What are my CP Treatment Options?
The most significant and noticeable effects that cerebral palsy causes are usually those that involve the muscles. Most of the time, when this condition is first noticed, it is because a floppy or overly rigid musculature is noticed in an infant. This usually leads to the doctors calling for testing to see if cerebral palsy is an issue. Cerebral palsy is the direct result of baby brain damage, so this is what the tests will center on finding.
If it is Discovered
If doctors do discover that cerebral palsy is present in the infant, there will be several different options available to the parents depending upon the severity of the condition. In some cases, it may be likely that the infant will have serious cognitive impairments and that they will never achieve the full mental capacity of an adult. In other cases, the brain damage may be relatively minor and may only result in the child having some difficulty with mobility and some more minor cognitive impairment. Some of these symptoms will not be discoverable until the child is old enough to determine whether or not they are learning at the rate they would be expected to learn at and whether or not they are able to move as well as would be expected for a child of their age.
Treatments
It's impossible to actually treat a brain injury. A brain injury is a permanent condition and there is nothing that can be done to reverse it or to make it heal in any regard. However, it is possible to give the child treatments that may lessen the severity of the symptoms they experience as a result of their cerebral palsy. This usually involves a combination of physical therapy, medications and sometimes injections into the muscles to afford them more flexibility. Some people with cerebral palsy suffer from seizure disorders and there is medication used to treat these conditions if they manifest.
In some cases, you may not be able to pay for all of the treatments that your child needs. If you are in a situation where you cannot afford to pay for your child's treatments, and if it hasn't been too long since the child's condition was diagnosed, you may be able to sue the doctor or the healthcare facility for damages if there was medical negligence involved in your child coming down with this condition. If you believe this to be the case, contact an attorney.
