What do You Know About Cerebral Palsy?

Some of the most surprising cerebral palsy facts have to do with what the birth injury really means for the people who suffer from it. In some cases, the symptoms of this injury are not nearly as devastating his parents fear. In other cases, however, the child may be severely cognitively impaired and may have almost no ability to take care of themselves. One of the most important things to understand about cerebral palsy is that it can vary greatly from case to case.

cerebral palsy lawyerMobility

Mobility is an issue for just about everybody that suffers from cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy causes uneven muscle tone throughout the body, which results in the sufferer having a hard time keeping their balance and performing complex tasks, such as walking. Sometimes, a person with cerebral palsy will be able to get by using a simple pair of crutches. Some of the most serious cases require that the person has a wheelchair, not only for mobility but also to make sure that they have access to all of the additional medical equipment they need, which is sometimes attached to the chair.

Learning

Almost everybody with cerebral palsy has at least some cognitive impairment. There are some sufferers, however, who have the full intellectual capacity that would be expected for a person of their age. If they do have difficulties learning, it sometimes traces back to the fact that most CP sufferers have some speech and hearing problems. Problems in these areas can cause learning disabilities for anybody, whether or not they have CP. Fortunately, there are excellent educators available who specialize in working with such children.

Living

People who suffer from cerebral palsy sometimes will need assistance throughout their lives. While they may be able to get around fine on their own, they still will be unlikely to be able to drive a car, go back and forth to the grocery store, take care of needs around the house and so forth. This is why many people who have CP have some sort of assistance given to them by a home healthcare specialist. Of course, this can cost an awful lot of money. People who have the most severe symptoms of cerebral palsy sometimes need to live out their entire lives in an assisted-living facility or in a nursing home where they can be given the level of medical treatment that they need in order to have a good quality of life.
