What Does Cerebral Palsy Mean for My Child?

Cerebral palsy has some very serious consequences. They are, in fact, severe enough that the parents of a child with cerebral palsy will sometimes contact a birth injury attorney to see if they can seek compensation for the expenses related to this injury. Those expenses, in some cases, can be very high.

The treatments for cerebral palsy can sometimes be very expensive. The brain injury that causes the condition cannot be treated, but it is possible to alleviate some of the worst of the symptoms and to give the child some greater degree of freedom with the right assistive devices. Some of the more expensive items the child may need include:

  • Hearing Aids
  • Walkers
  • Wheelchairs
  • Braces and other Supportive Devices
  • Special Instruction and Tutoring
  • Full-Time Assistance in Severe Cases

These items may well be needed for the child's entire life, which means that the expenses never really end. The child will not only need this assistance from their parents when they're growing, but will also need more assistance when their parents are gone and this is sometimes what concerns parents the most.

Making sure that your child has the best chances sometimes requires that you seek compensation for their injuries. This can only be done when there is a specific reason that someone can be held liable for your child's injuries. For example, if the injury was caused in the womb before birth, there is no way that a doctor can be held liable for it if it could not have been prevented. If the doctors did all they could be expected to do for the child and the child still suffered the injury, there's no way that anyone can be said to have breached their duty to their patient and, therefore, there is no way to sue anyone.

If there is cause to believe that there was negligence that led to the child's injuries, however, there may be cause to sue. A lawyer can tell you whether a case is worth pursuing but, of course, they cannot tell you if it is going to win or not. This will only be determined if there is a jury trial or if the case is filed and the party you're suing offers a settlement instead of going to court over the matter. If you want to know whether or not you have a case, you have to talk to an attorney to make that determination.
