3 Things to Consider When Your Child is Diagnosed with CP

If your child is diagnosed with CP, it’s likely that you’re going to be more than overwhelmed. This is understandable, of course. Your child may be facing a very difficult road ahead of them. CP can cause a range of issues for the people who suffer with it. It can cause problems with learning, problems with mobility and much more. Because of all this, it’s important to remember that there are recourses you have available to you and that taking advantage of them may make a significant difference in your child’s life.

Cerebral palsy in infants1: Medical Expenses

It’s invariably going to be very expensive for you to deal with the medical expenses that come with cerebral palsy. These expenses include everything from treatments to help with muscle spasms to assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers. You may also need to purchase hearing aids or other equipment to help your child. Again, all of these things can be very expensive and may end up costing your family a great deal of money over time.

2: Transportation and Other Everyday Expenses

If your child needs a wheelchair to get around, you’re going to have to be able to transport that equipment in your vehicle. This sometimes means that you’ll have to upgrade in vehicles to allow for carrying wheelchairs or other assistive devices when you when you go out and about. If your child needs a particularly elaborate wheelchair, you may have to use a lift van, which is a very expensive piece of equipment that’s only available from specialized dealerships.

3: Education and Tutoring

People with cerebral palsy oftentimes have difficulties in school. Learning disabilities are common features of this range of disorders and you may find that your child needs a lot of extra attention in the classroom. They may need a tutor to help them get through classes. The good news is that, with the right resources, some people with CP go on to get higher educations and to live rich intellectual lives.

If your child is affected by CP and if you’re facing the medical and other expenses on your own, you may want to speak with a cerebral palsy lawyer. Cerebral palsy in infants is sometimes the direct result of medical negligence and, when it is, it’s up to the parents to make sure that their child has all the money they need to get by in life.
