Dealing with a Debilitating Baby Injury
A baby injury can be devastating. In some cases, the circumstances of the pregnancy or the delivery may end up with the child being affected by a condition such as cerebral palsy, which lasts for life and which can have very serious implications for the quality of the life of the person affected. To understand how cerebral palsy affects a person’s life, you start by understanding the injury itself.
Brain Injuries
Brain injuries, of course, never heal and cerebral palsy is the result of a brain injury. In the case of this disorder, the part of the brain that is injured has to do with controlling the muscles. The classic symptom of this disorder is uneven muscle tone. This results in problems walking, expressing with the face and, especially, with fine motor skills.
Many people with cerebral palsy suffer increased symptoms when they attempt to perform fine tasks. In such cases, whenever they try to do precise work of any kind, their muscles start to tremble or freeze up. While some people with cerebral palsy suffer severe mental impairments, many do not and this means that this condition is incredibly frustrating for them.
Treatments
There are treatments for cerebral palsy, but there are no cures. Sometimes, injections can control muscle spasms enough to allow more mobility and control over the body. There are also treatments that make use of hot and cold, treatments that use various medications and there are a variety of assistive devices that people with cerebral palsy can use to increase their mobility. Some people with this disorder have very minor symptoms that may be barely noticeable and others may have symptoms that are very severe. Some people with cerebral palsy require constant care and cannot feed themselves and have devastating levels of metal impairment.
New Treatments
There are always new treatments being devised for this condition but, at present, there is no way to repair damage to the brain. Once a child suffers this injury, the damage lasts for life. The costs of paying for medical treatments can be very high and there are occasions when families simply lack the resources to give their child the best care possible.
Some cases of CP are caused by medical negligence during pregnancy or delivery. If you believe that this is the case with your child’s condition, you can contact a lawyer to see about seeking compensation via a lawsuit.
