Some Things to Consider About Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is most distinctive for its effects on walking and motor control. Though the usual image that people have of someone who suffers from this disorder is one where the individual is completely confined to a wheelchair and is severely cognitively impaired, this is not always the case. In fact, some people with cerebral palsy lead relatively normal lives and you probably wouldn’t guess that they had this injury if you didn’t know them very well. Here are some things to consider about this disorder.
It Affects the Muscles
If you know someone with CP who has intermittent symptoms, they’ve probably told you about the muscle spasms. When this happens, people with CP oftentimes end up laid up for a few days, even if they get around fine on their own the rest of the time. Even when the symptoms aren’t constantly severe, people with CP do tend to have episodes when they become very severe.
It Can Affect Learning
Many people with severe physical disabilities that result from CP end up going to college and getting degrees. Some people, however, end up with very several cognitive impairments, in addition to any physical problems from which they suffer. When this is the case, they may end up needing a lot of tutoring and extra help in school, if they can attend at all. In some cases, people with very severe CP may need constant assistance and may be completely unable to care for themselves.
It Doesn’t Heal
CP cannot heal. Once someone has the injury, they have it for life. The symptoms sometimes get a bit worse with age, but there are some very promising treatments out there.
You May Not Even Know
You may actually know people with CP and be unaware of it. Some people with this disorder work regular jobs, may only exhibit minor symptoms, such as trouble walking and have ordinary lives. There are plenty of people in the entertainment industry, in fact, who have CP and they’re not always in roles where their disability is the focus of the character.
Sometimes, cerebral palsy happens because of natural causes and sometimes it happens because of medical negligence. A cerebral palsy lawyer sometimes represents parents when the latter is the case. These lawyers sometimes win millions for the sufferer as the result of filing a cerebral palsy lawsuit against the negligent healthcare providers involved.
