CP Patient's Mother Needs Help

Cheryl Wuertz of Poydras lost everything she owned in Hurricane Katrina. She is 46-years-old and suffers from kidney failure, which forces her to undergo dialysis three times per week. Her daughter, Sissy Packard, has cerebral palsy and is partially blind.

Wuertz worked full-time before she had health issues, and hoped that the money she saved would help with the necessary repairs to her house. Unfortunately, that has been impossible.

Sissy lives in a private facility in Harvey, where the young woman with cerebral palsy receives nursing care around the clock.

Wuertz wants to be able to take care of her daughter on weekends, however, she doesn't have the means to renovate her home.

"I want to have her home with me on weekends because it is important for her to get exercise. At the facility Sissy is in, she does not even go outside," she said.

So far, Wuertz has not been able to get any help from government agencies.

A volunteer caseworker named Cindi Stone has gotten involved in Wuertz's situation and hopes to find assistance for her.

"I want to help her any way that I can," Stone said.

It is always a sad situation when cerebral palsy patients do not get the care they need. If you would like to find out more about the situation or help out in any way, contact Cindi Stone at (504) 473-7092.
