Dallas Cerebral Palsy Attorney | Cerebral Palsy & Education

Cerebral Palsy and Education

One of the first and most important things that people need to understand about cerebral palsy is the role of severity. Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that are caused by brain damage in infants and children. Just as there is no one universal severity where brain injuries are concerned, there is no one universal severity where cerebral palsy is concerned. The severity of the disorder varies significantly from case to case. One of the ways that this variation manifests is in how far along in the educational system a person with CP ends up going.

Treatment of Cerebral PalsyMental Challenges

Some people with cerebral palsy will be in a near-vegetative state for their entire lives. There are also people with cerebral palsy who end up with advanced degrees and who end up with very good careers. One of the hardest things for parents to deal with is the fact that there is really no way to know for sure how things will turn out for their child at first. Some people with cerebral palsy have very severe physical disabilities, but their mental acuity is very impressive and there's no way to know whether or not this is the case until they're old enough to start school.

Speech and Hearing

Even if someone with CP does very well in school and has all of the mental development that would be expected of anyone else their age, they will likely have some trouble with speech and hearing. Cerebral palsy affects all of the muscles, including those of the face, so speech can be a bit tricky for people with the disorder. Many of them have a distinctive speech impediment that is very easy to hear. With good speech therapy, however, most people with CP can be understood as well as anyone else and can be completely comfortable with speaking to other people, or even as a performer or public speaker.

Don't Despair

As you learn more about CP, you'll learn more about the people who have it. They include actors, scientists, technicians and many other people.

The treatment of cerebral palsy can be very expensive. Consider speaking with a cerebral palsy lawyer in Dallas if you believe that medical negligence was a factor in your child suffering cerebral palsy brain damage. You may find that a lawsuit will win your family enough compensation to pay for your child's treatments and to ensure that they get the best possible chance at living a fulfilling life.
