Dallas Cerebral Palsy Attorney | Making Friends at School

Making Friends at School

Cerebral palsy sufferers have a lot of challenges to deal with on an everyday basis. When they start school, these challenges usually become more complicated. In most cases, children don't go to the same school for their entire K-12 education. This means that there will be at least a couple of occasions where parents have to look for a school that can accommodate the needs of their child, which can be tough.

Special Education

Dallas cerebral palsy attorneyProbably the most significant factor in determining where your child goes to school will be whether or not they need special educational resources. Not all people with cerebral palsy actually need special education. Some people with cerebral palsy have the same level of mental development that would be expected for any child their age. If your child does need special education, however, you have to make certain that you send them to the school with good resources to accommodate that need, which can be difficult to find.

Mobility

Most children with cerebral palsy do suffer some diminished mobility. This means that they need to be in a school that can accommodate their need for ramps instead of staircases, drinking fountains that are accessible to people in wheelchairs and so forth. If your child only has access to one school, that school may have to make accommodations for your child. Generally speaking, however, most schools are very good as far as being set up to accommodate children with special needs goes.

Socialization

Make certain that you take into account how important it is for your child to be able to socialize with peers. Sometimes, parents of children with cerebral palsy forget the fact that they are dealing with a child, an adolescent or a teenager and that their child's needs are essentially the same as anyone else's as far as socialization goes. If you can help your child to get out, make friends and have a good time, be sure to take the opportunity to do so.

There are great resources out there for parents who have children with cerebral palsy. Be sure to check into local advocacy organizations, national advocacy organizations and so forth, so that you are taking advantage of all of the resources you have available to you. A Dallas cerebral palsy attorney can assist you if you're interested in pursuing a lawsuit over the birth injuries that your child suffered that led to cerebral palsy.
