Actors, Doctors & Artists - CP Sufferers Excel
It’s understandable that parents who find out that their child has cerebral palsy oftentimes worry about their future. Many of the children who suffer from this condition have severe learning disorders or physical limitations. This is not always the case, however, and there are some cerebral palsy sufferers who excel in their chosen careers.
How About this Career?
Those with CP do have career options. For example, Dr. Justin Ramsey of Iowa not only helps people with cerebral palsy, he suffers from it himself. According to an article in the Des Moines Register, Dr. Ramsey works with children with all kinds of mobility issues. His cerebral palsy is not severe and, by his own admission, it’s unfair to compare his experience with someone who has very severe CP. Still, his career and work show that not everyone with CP will have their options limited by the disorder.
The Arts
There are quite a few actors with CP. One of the advantages of having actors with a disability is that they can play characters with similar disabilities without being condescending in any way. Their experiences as individuals with disabilities also enable them to interpret the characters in a way that people without disabilities cannot. This adds depth to the character. As an example, RJ Mitte III plays the character Walt Jr. on the popular crime drama Breaking Bad. Like his character, Mitte suffers from cerebral palsy. Mitte does more than just portray a character with CP, his character is a complex person of which his disability is only one facet.
Finding Hope
To a some extent, the amount of opportunity that someone with a disorder such as CP will have available to them depends upon the financial situation of the parents. One of the reasons that people sometimes sue negligent doctors and healthcare facilities over birth injures is because the parents want to be able to give their child greater freedom and financial independence. It’s important to remember how much the severity of cerebral palsy can vary, however. In some cases, the disorder is very mild and symptoms are not severe. In other cases, it may be debilitating. Contact a Dallas cerebral palsy lawyer if you believe your child’s medical condition was caused by doctor negligence, no matter how severe it may be.
