Discovering How Cerebral Palsy Affects Infants

in birth injury cerebral palsy
Cerebral Palsy, known to be one of the leading causes of birth injury, can strike with no warning. Known as a medical condition, cerebral palsy is caused by permanent brain injury that can occur just before delivery and shortly afterwards. However, doctors are able to diagnose this birth injury almost immediately after birth. Keep in mind - between 10 to 20 percent of diagnosed cases are obtained after birth. Not a progressive disease, cerebral palsy effects are known to possibly change over a set period.

So how do you know if your baby has a birth injury?

When defining cerebral palsy, most doctors agree that it's a group of disorders. However, these groups may be related and possibly stem from many other causes. A few ways to diagnose this type of birth injury is to look at the risk factors involving both the mothers and children's medical history, and the beginning of the disorder.

The symptoms of cerebral palsy may affect infants greatly. Brain damage is one factor in the development of the birth injury, cerebral palsy. Seizures, spasms, seeing and hearing problems are just a few of the symptoms. Others include hyperactivity and learning disorders. Although there is no cure for this birth injury, there are many forms of treatments that can be done through therapy. The good news is that infants can become successful in life while coping with cerebral palsy.

So how do doctors diagnose cerebral palsy?

There are two ways of looking at it. One way of determining is if your baby was denied oxygen while passing through the birth canal. Another way is if the baby wasn't delivered within 24 hours after the mother's water broke. These two indicators will definitely increase the probability of brain damage to an infant.
