Financial Facts About Severe Cases of Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is not always severe. Some sufferers will enjoy lives that are very similar to most people's experiences. They may have some trouble walking and some learning difficulties but, other than that, life will be basically normal. Other cases, however, will be very severe. These cases of cerebral palsy oftentimes require very extensive and costly medical treatments and, in most cases, some level of tutoring in school. Some of the costs will be unavoidable.
Assistive Devices
Most everyone with cerebral palsy will need at least one assistive device. In most cases, the more severe the case, the more expensive the assistive devices. For example, someone with very severe cerebral palsy will usually need a wheelchair. If they can get around in it on their own, they'll usually still require an electric wheelchair because of the problems using their muscles. These can cost thousands of dollars and, of course, people do outgrow them as they age. For parents with children with CP, this is one of the highest expenses they face.
Caregivers
When the child goes to school, most parents will have to hire a full-time caregiver to render assistance. These caregivers can be costly but there is no way that the child will be able to get along without assistance. The child may also need a tutor to help them with their studies. Some people with even relatively severe CP can do well in school, with the right help, and most parents will be naturally inclined to want to afford them every opportunity to learn.
Hearing and Vision
It's not uncommon for people with severe cerebral palsy to have trouble seeing and hearing. Of course, this means that they'll need glasses and hearing aids. Glasses are relatively minor expenses but quality hearing aids are not. Hearing aids also make it possible for the child to get more out of their education and, in some cases, are helpful for the child where overcoming speech problems is concerned.
Some lawsuits that are filed against healthcare providers whose negligence let to baby brain damage include sums for future medical care. In fact, this is one of the more forward-thinking moves a parent can make. While the present costs may be high, the child will grow into an adult that needs more care in the future, and this may end up being a very expensive proposition.
