Help for Cerebral Palsy Project in South Africa
The Hambisela Project is run by the Cerebral Palsy Association, and is aimed at improving the lives of individuals who live with this condition and helping them realize their potential.Heavy-hitting financial services company Alexander Forbes has sponsored the Cerebral Palsy Association with $245,000 to help the project and improve the lives of around 16,000 people who live with cerebral palsy in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
This project is aimed at reaching people who live with CP in remote rural areas. It tried to improve the level and intensity of therapeutically correct, ongoing care.
Training sessions were created by the Cerebral Palsy Association and the Department of Health and were used to boost information that is communicated to the people about the condition.
"Our facilitators are trained to train others how to help and care for people with cerebral palsy," said one representative.
The project is believed to be the most effective in historically marginalized communities where the project intends to be the most effective in equipping people with the condition to achieve their best life.
Since the project began in 2003, 50 administrators have been trained and 20 groups have been started by these administrators to train and educate caregivers and parents of people with cerebral palsy.
The project hopes to improve the level and quality of care to people with cerebral palsy to maximize their physical development, so that they will eventually be able to develop skills and become economically self-sufficient.
