Irish Girl with Cerebral Palsy Wins 4.25 Million Settlement
Grace Stynes, a young girl with cerebral palsy, won a major battle this week that will help her make her life as comfortable as possible. Grace is an example of a case where injury at birth results in cerebral palsy.During the birth process, Grace suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen to the brain. She was awarded 4.25 million after her family sued Coombe Women's Hospital of Dublin, Ireland, where she was born.
She is seven years old now, and although her life has not been easy, Grace has been a tremendous fighter.
The settlement was approved in the High Court, and the judge said that he was thankful that Grace was intellectually sound.
According to court documents, Grace's mother, Sabrina, was given the wrong drug during labor, which caused distress to the fetus. On top of that, Grace was deprived of oxygen during the caesarean section, which led to brain damage. The hospital also failed to contact Grace's father in regards to the caesarean section. Had they been able to perform one in a timely manner, they would have been able to avoid the trauma-inducing damage of the forceps delivery.
Expert witnesses showed that Grace's life expectancy would be reduced by around 25 percent, because of what happened to her.
