3 Things to Expect When CP Causes an Intellectual Disability

An intellectual disability can be incapacitating or merely another hurdle to be overcome. There are some people with cerebral palsy who have severe intellectual disabilities and who cannot care for themselves. There are others with cerebral palsy who are barely affected intellectually by the disorder. Note that, in some situations, the term "mental retardation" is still used, particularly where federal law is concerned. Though it has been largely replaced by the term intellectual disability, you may find it in use in some venues. In everyday life, the term mental retardation is almost universally regarded as disparaging.

1: Trouble Adapting

People with intellectual disabilities have a hard time adapting to new and novel situations. Routine is oftentimes very important to them and upsetting their routines can be very disturbing. Anticipate this. With a bit of encouragement and learning, people with intellectual disabilities can learn to be more open to adapting to new situations.

2: Trouble Learning

Learning disabilities are very common in people with intellectual disabilities. Some people who aren't severely impacted by their CP may be able to overcome these on their own or with a tutor who knows how to work with individuals who have disabilities. Others may never be able to get past a certain grade level, but they still can live rich and rewarding lives.

3: Emotional Issues

Many people with intellectual disabilities sometimes have emotional outbursts for what can be surprising reasons. Parents and teachers can help by learning the triggers and providing opportunities for the person with the disability to get used to whatever disturbs them. Sometimes, the outbursts are inevitable and have to be accommodated. Patience, understanding and a willingness to grow as a person and to develop your own sense of compassion will help you to overcome frustration with these issues.

There are different levels and types of intellectual disabilities, just as there are different types of cerebral palsy: ataxic cerebral palsy and dyskinetic cerebral palsy, for instance. If your child is affected by this condition, you might have to learn to deal with the challenges that an intellectual disability can create for parents. Fortunately, there are great organizations out there and there is plenty of information available that can help. Special education resources, tutors can aid you in learning more about intellectual disabilities. Familiarity with the facts can help you get better at dealing with intellectual disabilities and help you understand people who have them.
