Some Information Regarding Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a term for several disorders that affect body movement, balance and posture. This term can generally be accepted to mean, "brain paralysis".

Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal development or damage to one or more parts of the brain that control muscle tone and motor activity. The resulting impairments appear early in life, usually in infancy. Infants with cerebral palsy are typically quite slow to reach developmental periods, such as rolling over, sitting, or walking.

The most common affects of cerebral palsy are muscle stiffness, poor muscle tone, uncontrolled movements and problems with posture, balance, walking, speech and other functions.

Seizures, learning disabilities, mental retardation, bladder and bowel problems are all linked to cerebral palsy. The severity of these problems vary quite widely, from extremely mild to quite extreme.

Some types of cerebral palsy are:

Spastic

Dyskinetic

Mixed

Athetoid

Ataxic
