Taking Care of Young Man With Cerebral Palsy Is A Full-Time Job

Nick Garraway has cerebral palsy. As an infant, he spent the first 10 days of his life in a humidicrib and developed a brain injury after he was caught in his mother's birth canal.

Nick is now eighteen years old and he is both physically and mentally affected by cerebral palsy, so everyday tasks are hurdles for him.

At six months old, Nick's parents said he had a rough start.

"When he was born the midwife said, "I don't know if you are Catholic but if you are start saying some prayers," Nick's mother said.

Nick's father said that one of the biggest battles he had was with people staring at Nick when he was a little boy.

"It was difficult when he was so little because his disability was more noticeable. He had a special seat in his stroller so people would stare," Mr. Garraway said.

Nick's parents say that caring for Nick is a full-time job, because of his cerebral palsy. They shower him, get him breakfast and help him go to the restroom.

"Nick will never be self sufficient but he's such a fun-loving guy and he's a special part of our lives," Mr. Garraway said.
