Treatment of Cerebral Palsy | My Child has Cerebral Palsy, What Can I Do?

My Child has Cerebral Palsy, What Can I Do?

Depending upon the severity, children with cerebral palsy suffer from several different symptoms. Though there is no cure for cerebral palsy, the symptoms can be assuaged with the right combination of medication and treatment from a medical professional.

cerebral palsy cause

Seizures

People with cerebral palsy often have problems with seizures. One of the options for the treatment of cerebral palsy is to consult a neurologist who may provide the sufferer with medications that reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures.

Hearing and Speech

Hearing and speech are often difficult for people with cerebral palsy. These symptoms, however, can be lessened with the use of hearing aids and speech therapy. Taking these measures can help the person with CP to communicate better with both their peers and their family and allow them the freedom to live comfortably.

Cognitive Disorders

Even though most people with CP have average or above average intelligence, they sometimes suffer from cognitive disorders. Educators that specialize in working with special needs children can work wonders in these areas. By dedicating more time with the child and ensuring that they have the opportunity to excel as much as their peers do, the educator and the parents can help give the child an enriched education and a better quality of life.

Muscle Tone

Cerebral palsy causes the muscles to be difficult to control. When the sufferer tries to do something that requires a lot of coordination or fine motor skills, they oftentimes find themselves trembling. This can intensify the harder they try to perform the task. This can make everyday challenges extremely difficult and frustrating. In some cases, injections can alleviate the worst symptoms of the uneven muscle tone that characterizes cerebral palsy. These treatments can help to alleviate the worst of these symptoms, though the results may vary from individual to individual.

Severe Symptoms

In some cases, a person with cerebral palsy may have symptoms so severe that they are unable to enjoy the simplest of everyday activities. Fortunately, equipment such as a computer voice synthesizer or an electric wheelchair can help children with CP communicate more effectively and improve mobility. Though this equipment can be costly, it may be worth it to ensure your child has a greater degree of freedom and happiness.

If it's apparent that medical negligence was the cause of your child's cerebral palsy, parents are encouraged to seek an attorney's guidance and expertise in pursuing legal action. Sometimes, they are able to recover substantial settlements to cover medical costs, treatments, medications, and equipment your child needs to live a better life.

My son Liam was born at 26 weeks 2lb 7oz on 10-11-2009. Due to placenta eruption (don't no why having got 2 other children and went full term both delivered naturally but assisted) Liam was delivered natural but taken straight to neonatal intensive care and ventilated for about 6weeks oscillator-CPAP, then oxygen till july 2010. They didn't have much hope for Liam, had many scans which shown very large ventricle due to a bleed (more so on the right which had made a hole) the bleed was graded a 4. Then feb 2010 we was moved to another hospital for Liam to have a VP shunt fitted as he developed hydrocephalus. Considering all what Liam went though I no how lucky we/he are. As Liam is now sitting-bum shuffling can communicate with us he knows who we all are and is tryin to say a lot of words. His mobility is affected down his left side, he has CP and high muscle tone causes him lots
of frustration. I always TRY to treat him how I would with my other children, we do regular daily exercises, I always try to involve his left hand. Can anyone help Me with more info so I can give the the best I possibly can don't no what I'm askin but if any of what iv wrote here sound familiar please can you tell me your story or any advice
