Understanding Cerebral Palsy Causes

There are several different reasons that a child may develop cerebral palsy, some of them poorly understood. In many cases, however, cerebral palsy in infants is a direct result of an injury sustained during the birthing process. In some cases, the injury is also the result of medical negligence on the part of the facility where the birth took place, the attending physician or the nurses.

Cerebral Palsy CausesCerebral palsy is caused by brain damage. The brain damage, in the case of this particular disorder, affects the muscle tone most dramatically. Cerebral palsy causes uneven muscle tone across the body and creates great difficulty when the sufferer attempts to control their muscles. In some cases, fine motor skills are practically nonexistent. Some particular types of cerebral palsy have particular symptoms, such as ataxic cerebral palsy, which is known for causing an unsteady walk in the sufferer. Walking difficulties are very common among people who suffer with CP.

In a case where the cerebral palsy is caused by a birth injury that could've been avoided, some parents seek to file a lawsuit to recover compensation from the party responsible. The reason they do this is usually simply because the treatments for this condition can be extremely expensive. While birth injuries that involve brain damage can never truly heal, there are some treatments that can improve the quality of life of the sufferer considerably. There are also assistive devices that allow people with CP to interact socially to a greater degree and to get more out of their experience at school, such as hearing aids, glasses and other devices. All of these devices, of course, tend to be very expensive.

In some cases, the baby brain damage that leads to cerebral palsy may not be the fault of the medical practitioner, the facility at which the child was born or anyone else's fault. There are cases when this damage occurs for reasons that aren't fully understood. There are also cases where cerebral palsy is not diagnosed for quite a while after birth, simply because the infant isn’t using their muscles very much and isn't expected to directly after being born. Normally, the condition is first noticed when the child's muscle tone seems to be either too rigid or too floppy or distressingly uneven. The condition is sometimes diagnosed using brain scans and other technologies that allow doctors to take a detailed look at the child's brain.
