United Cerebral Palsy Prepares Disabled Arkansans In Cartridge Recycling Career

United Cerebral Palsy of Arkansas is one of the few places in the state offering a recycling service for ink cartridges. Employees at UCP sort, re-build, package and ship recycled toner cartridges.

Every employee is disabled but are able to work on machines that rotate so they can use both hands. Every cartridge is tested before it goes into packages and unusable parts are recycled and replaced with new ones.

In a mere seven months cartridge recycling can save over 11 million gallons of oil. That's more than what was spilled by Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989.

This business is both good for the environment and good for Arkansans with cerebral palsy.

"Most our employees would probably be seating in day centers not being able to be productive. It's very important to their self esteem and it's also very important to their health. If a person has a high self esteem and feels like they're being productive they're health tends to improve," Leslie says.
