Water Therapy For Cerebral Palsy

A new treatment at UNC-Chapel Hill is providing cerebral palsy patients with several benefits. This therapy is designed so that cerebral palsy adults exercise in water, which provides more intense workouts and less physical wear.

Diane Damiano, president of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Research, a Wisconsin-based research group, says that this new therapy has many implications for therapeutic care. She also states that the trial may help the increasing sedentary general population of aging adults.

The $685,000 trial which was designed by UNC-CH professor and therapist Deborah Thorpe and funded by the National Institutes of Health, follows adults with cerebral palsy through a 12-week course of intensively monitored exercise in water. One of the exercises includes stepping on and off of a 6-inch block that is submerged at the bottom of the pool.

Did you know that cerebral palsy can sometimes be the result of medical negligence at birth? If believe that your child's cerebral palsy may be the result of medical malpractice or negligence, contact a cerebral palsy attorney by calling 1 800 ATTORNEY today.
