What Are Some Complications of Cerebral Palsy?
Around 1/3 of patients who have cerebral palsy have mild intellectual impairment. Mental problems are most common in children with spastic quadriplegia.Around half of all cerebral palsy patients have seizures, which are bursts of electricity disrupting the brain's normal pattern of activity. Seizures that occur without a trigger are known as epilepsy.
There are generally 2 types of seizures:
Tonic-clonic seizures: These spread throughout the brain and cause the patient to cry out and causing unconsciousness, twitching of the legs and arms, convulsive body movements and a complete loss of bladder control.
Partial seizures: These are typically localized to one area of the brain. Simple partial seizures will cause muscle twitching, chewing movements and numbness or tingling. Complex partial seizures may produce hallucinations, random movement and impaired consciousness or confusion.
Vision and hearing problems are a very common phenomenon with children who have cerebral palsy. Left and right eye muscle differences can cause, strabismus, which is double vision. Children's brains will very often adapt to this condition by ignoring the symbols of one eye. Sometimes corrective surgery is necessary.
Other common complications that cerebral palsy individuals might experience include: hip dislocation, curvature of the spine, incontinence, tooth deca, bronchitis, skin sores and asthma.
