What are Some Toy ideas for Children with Cerebral Palsy?
9/18/08Children with cerebral palsy have a difficult time with traditional toys that are meant to be used with two hands. Many times children with CP are limited to the use of one side of their body or the use of only one of their hands.
Toys are intended to be fun and kids should have good feelings from playing with them, rather than becoming frustrated. However, many times, commercial toys that are on the market CAN be adapted for children with cerebral palsy.
Musical instruments are good for children with cerebral palsy. They have a very strong cause/effect theme that engages the children. Other types of toys that are good for cerebral palsy include:
Magnetic toys
Balls that glow in the dark or play music
Toys that help with sensory integration (for instance, sand or rice in a dishpan.
Toys that are good for coordination or movement.
Bowls full of beads or jelly beans for sorting, counting and grouping.
Building blocks are good for controlled movement
Play-doh is another phenomenal toy. It gives your child a sense of sensory awareness and integration.
Did you know that sometimes cerebral palsy may be the result of birth injury or medical negligence? If you believe that your child's cerebral palsy is a result of medical malpractice, contact a cerebral palsy attorney right away.
